The range, originally known as Chandra Drona Parvatha, takes its current name from the Dattapeeta Cave and 17th century Sufi saint Baba Budan who took up residence here more than 150 years ago and according to legend, he introduced coffee to India by bringing coffee beans from the port of Mocha, Yemen. It is 6317 feet above sea level and one of the highest mountain peaks between the Himalayas and the Nilgiris. The Tomb of Hajarat Dada Hayath Mir Kalandar, worshipped as the Mecca of the South by Muslims, is in a cave of this mountain. The Hindus too worship this place as ‘Dattatreoya Peeta’. Since these hills naturally form the shape of a crescent moon, they are named as ‘Chandradrona parvatha shreni’.
